This adventure in the Mid Atlantic Ridge takes us to the only inhabited island of 4,200 residents known as Vestmanneyjar. It was here on January 23rd, 1973 when the Islands 5,500 residents, at that time, were awakened one night  at nearly 2 AM as the ground started to split open as a new volcano was being born right in their back yards. 

 

A massive island evacuation followed and in just under 4 hours on that cold, dark January night, all residents were safely evacuated from the island to Iceland‘s main coast. The volcano continued erupting for nearly 6 months and as a part of this tour, you will be able to climb to the crater and feel, after just 37 years, how warm it still is.

 

You will see many other interesting sites on the island. Have a boat cruise off the coastal shore among the seabirds and puffins of this island and enjoy a light lunch as well.
